Forgeworld and Dreadnoughts.

So my Forgeworld Order arrived. And man was I excited at the prospect of many dreadnoughts for my new Blood Angel List!

First was this Furioso Dread. I could not resist the beauty of the Venerable Dread Model. I found the wings very appropriate for a BA dread with all the bling and wings the new range is getting! The arms are metal furioso arms from my old collection. And the Blood Talons are from the Bjorn the fell handed Dreadnought model. (I actually got this bitz from GW nottingham HQ when I was on holiday there in year 2000!!! Gosh it's been 10 years?!?!)

This Death Company Dreadnought 1 is my my old Furiosio Dread (that I have since not painted). And I have used the new forgeworld Close Combat Arms to represent the blood talons.

Similarly using the forgeworld CC arms on this simple Assault on Black Reach Dreadnought. I simply shaved off a little detail on the front. This shall be Death Company Dreadnought 2.

All the dreads for a groupshot! The painted dread at the back is a normal Multi-Melta Armed Dread. Now I'm awaiting the 4 droppods that I ordered from Maelstrom!!!

Wulfen Predator Tank WIP 2

WIP: Carnifex

Just completed a few coats for my Fex. Damn large surfaces! Found that it's much better to basecoat with Dheneb Stone before you use Bleached Bone.

I have magnetised all the spare arms using the tips found at Miniwargaming.com. You can just google "magnetising carnifex" and that should give you some results. I bought like 1000 rare earth magnets and shared half with my cousin (Joasht).

Pregame Intell on Alex's 1500 Iron man list

Hi guys, about a year ago, when I was completely oblivious on how to play 40k, I had my ass handed to me sideways by a friend of mine who runs a ultra marines list which he has dubbed "The Iron Man List"

I guess the HK gaming crowd isn't as big and many urban legends and half-truths about this particular list have emerged. People have said it is possibly the toughest SM list in hkg. I think its blasphemous... even tho I'm a newb but I like the challenge... Anyhow, I'm pretty sure Alex is very confident of his list. I wanted to get some of your input in how my puppies can crack Alex' smurfs... some intell on what i'll be facing;

• master of the forge aka "iron man": conversion beamer, the further you are away, the stronger the beam
• sgt. telion: gives his bs to the scouts he's with sniper rifles
• 3 tacticals squads of 10 men strong... usually armed with melta gun and flamers. Rhinos included
• Possibly 3 basic ass-can dreads
• 3 preds or a mixture with ML or LC devestators...

My strategy:

ok... i need a few beers before i can do this properly but I was thinking of either empty deathwind drop pod into his rear with 2 drop pods to distract his iron man while I move up or... since his scouts are for taking wounds anyways, Jaws of the world wolf may be good for a situation like this... I was thinking about putting 4 rune preists... each with their own rhino or all 4 of them in a Land raider and just jaws him to death.... since jaws doesn't allow u to allocate who dies... if the lines touch that character... he must go... no one else... anyhow... I need help... hahaha. please give your 2 cents..

Tale of 6 Gamers: Spearhead

By now you guys must have seen the Spearhead rules online or from the June 2010 White Dwarf. And I am certain I can hear tanks, walkers and monstrous creatures rumbling in the distance.

So the next challenge is to paint up something for Spearhead. Now for the challenge, you can choose any one of your tanks, walkers or monstrous creatures.

As for this event, it starts 7^th June to 21^st June. Now commit your vehicle of choice!

Tale of 6 Gamers: Beef Nuggets Vet Squad 01

Here's my completed Squad for our first challenge.

I started out real fast but found myself slacking off and had to rush them on the last 2 days!

That takes my Mechanized Army's completed unit count to 2!

I painted quite a number of tanks already but always left out the troops as they are a real pain to convert. Will do up a post on how I converted them very soon!

So what and when is the next challenge? Tanks/Monstrous creatures?

Tale of 6 Gamers: First Challenge Complete!

Hey fellas!

I'm proud to present my 10 models which I had committed and completed. While they are lowly 5 points per gaunt, I am still very pleased with the level of quality. Took more time than I expected mainly due to the washes taking forever to dry but it is effective for finishing large units. However, I did go back to highlight the skin and that took a lot of time - precise work.

I love how the carapace turned out too. With streaks, you'll see the subtle gradation. Hope you enjoy them!

I believe that by putting a deadline on a set of models I pushed myself to complete each aspect of the model. I was really tempted at many junctions to go on to the next few models but stopped myself until the original 10 I committed were as complete as possible. Believe me, if not for the deadline, I would have 30 gaunts all painted semi complete. Having passed this first barrier of 10, now I can go on to finish more! 

Gathering of Angels

Hi all!

Only just finished up the minis for the Tale of 6 Gamers pledge :))

My pledge was to paint up 10 Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard. It took awhile cos of all the details on those fine miniatures. So here they are in all their winged glory:

Again it was really fun to paint these guys, and i had time to improve on the techniques i used earlier. Even more fun is the realization that i am doing it as part of a group. I enjoyed the experience of the Tale of 6 Gamers lots. Its my first participation in such an event :) Will definitely participate again if there are future events, even if i do not manage to finish the minis.

Oh yeah! I had the strangest feeling of being in uni again, and rushing to hand up the assignment the night before. LOL!

Predator (wulfen color pattern) WIP All primary highlights done

I did 2 layers of highlights on every single edge on 3 preds... after assembly, these 3 tanks took only 3 days to do... base coat, primary color, wash & highlights... a personal record for me... say hurray for the bad guy!

Painting Music

I hate painting quiet into the night... I'm usually a black music kinda guy, hop-hop, jazz, soul and R&B... but when I paint, LP gives me the drive, keeps me awake... Whats your sound? drop ur beats..... Let me know what ur listening so we can cut through this b*tich together...

Modelling: Differentiating Squads

I have a big problem differentiating one unit from the next when they are exactly the same between units. If you notice in the picture above, it's rather easy to tell each unit apart since you have the green ones, the grey ones and the purple ones. It will be extremely confusing once they are all in the same colour scheme. 

I am really open to suggestions to identify each unit from each other.

Here are a few things on top of my mind. 

I do not want to use a strong accent colour which will distract from the original colour scheme (purple - Hive Fleet Leviathan). A complementary colour is probably the best. I am thinking of putting a dot or two along the creatures' tails. One dot for one unit, two dots for another unit. The potential problem arises when I need more models for unit one whereby I will have to paint more Gaunts! 

Any other suggestions?

New Fantasy

Finally they have decided to print the actual magic cards which I will probably get together with the counters. I hope they are made in good quality materials - thick card or plastic otherwise it will just break after a couple of uses.

The other templates look great in design. Very medieval.

Army Profiles

Looking at Jason's army on Tuesday, I just realised that some of us have really beautiful armies. He was one such example.

Dakkadakka inspired me with their army profiles in 1998 when I was still a wee lad in Junior College. The idea is to have each player display their current painted collection and a picture of them to the website. I will put up a new category called Army Profiles.

Now I am aware that some of us (YC I'm looking at you) that have not completed our army or feel that it's a long way to go to completion. The good news is that the Army Profile is constantly being updated. It will be updated when you finish a new squad, add a new vehicle, add a monster. The idea is for it to be undergo organic growth with each of you making changes as and when you are done.

My Nids are far from done and I feel ashamed. My Eldar are all in Malaysia so it will take awhile before those guys will be posted on this webby.

I will still shoot a few pictures and use the Army Profile as my check and balance - to remind me what I want to achieve and complete. Hopefully this inspires you guys as well!

Wargames history- Skanwy Edition

Posting here to add to the collection of wargames historical tales :)

Thought i would give a spiel on my memory of wargaming :) My recollection is hazy at times, the fog of war has not yet lifted in its entirety ;P

I first had contact with the 40k universe through the PC version of the Space Hulk game. I played it endlessly even though i only made it through 3 missions. The intro scene with the Deathwing in their white Terminator armor was just unforgettable. And the amazing weapons like the thunder hammer which could also self destruct haha!

I had no idea that this was part of a larger universe of Warhammer. If i recall correctly, i rediscovered it again in Perth Australia when i went there for studies. A friend introduced it to me. I bought the IG Codex and later Codex Catachans.

Just a few months in, i was introduced to the Space Marines and saw the familiar figure of a Terminator in the codex. I was really happy as i had rediscovered the origins of these heroes from so many years ago.

I started my Deathwing collection and they have always had a special place in my heart :)

When i discovered Warhammer, i was still playing Magic the Gathering (MTG). But i sold the entire collection to a shop in Perth for quite a nice sum of money as used it to start my new journey into the world of miniatures!

I think i met Ray first in PI or some other place with gaming tables, haha, can't remember. I joined him for games at his place at Chinese Garden..i think. Later location changed to Lakeside. I met up with YC (crazyrat) and other great gamers :)) I think we were called Warpod 40K, and Ray was our fearless leader :) That name brings back such fond memories.

I later joined gaming at YC's place and met Daniel and Defeng (Jaeroler). Had a fantastic time gaming guys! Stuff of legend! I got into Warhammer Fantasy with a lot of guidance and patience from the guys there, and in turn found more minis to collect from GW's fantasy range haha!

I met Defu (Krom) at a tournament organised by Ed. It was my first and i think also Defu's first tourney. We were there to join in the festivities and excitement haha! We also had a good talk about lots of stuff and now game together at YC's place :)

Through time i have expanded my Iyanden Eldar collection and am also jumping on the Blood Angels bandwagon. Will not be going too deep into BA, and just made up a low budget BA army consisting of Sanguinary Guards ;)

I think i'm still more of a painter and modeler. The gaming aspect is an experiential one, but i'm proud to say my experience was an amazing one, only made possible by the awesome bunch of dudes i game with. Can't wait to come back for more battles man!

Distracting Terrain......

Instead of painting up my Veteran Guardsman. Which has yet to be completed and our challenge deadline is in 2 days! (gulp).

I was too amazed by the Honoured Imperium terrain set and spent some time painting them up! (*statue was painted by me, aquila by the wife.)

Predator (wulfen color pattern) WIP

Finally got over my procrastination of painting. Thanks to Ray's constant encouragement I finally mustered enough strength between work, rock climbing, running and 40k games to begin works on 3 predators which will be joining my space wolves vehicle armory.

A bit of background info, my sw army is mainly shadow grey with sw grey highlights. The "artifacts" in my army ie Landraiders, dreadnoughts are the lighter grey as depicted in the previous editions of sw to echo the idea of older and more revered machines. This time coming, i wanted my preds to have a more sinister feel. I want them to stick out from the rest with a darker feel. As you can see, my inspiration came from some real black furred wolves... Much more badass then huskies right? Comments are always welcomed!

Wargames history - enrgie Edition

Looks like reminiscing is all around us!

Going down memory lane, my first foray into the wonderful world of wargaming started with this one issue of White Dwarf 172 with Blood Bowl being released.

I happened to pick this issue up from MPH in Malaysia. I was only 14. I still remember Mike McVey who did an article on converting none other than the Blood Angels Captain on the 2nd edition of Warhammer40k.

He also did a conversion for an Eldar Dire Avenger from the 2nd Ed 40k Eldar Cover.

 

So with these two, I was really curious what this 40k was. I was 14 and money was really hard to come by. With the Ringgit so weak compared to the Pound, it was 1:5 then. I saved like all of you guys and bought my first squad of Space Wolves Grey Hunters. All metal, I saved up to get paints and a brush. We didn't really play since all my friends weren't really interested with the game. 

I kept those model away for another 3 years until I arrived in Singapore. Studying at NJ, my friend Kai Chan loves comics. He brought me to Comics Mart at Serene Centre and I found White Dwarf. It was one evening after school when I bumped into Melvin (Beef Nuggets). I went over to his place and played my first Fantasy game. He had DE by then. 

I then picked up Michael's High Elves who was selling it. Started painting them and still bought more models. It was in University that I really picked up the pace. It was also during this period that I brought the miniatures back to Malaysia with me and introduced 40k to my cousin Joash. We jointly got the 3rd Ed 40k boxed set. I actually had a friend fly back from the UK with the set for me! Met with YC sometime in 2nd year of Uni and we kept building our armies. James then started his Tau army. My cousin Hong Yew joined too with his Imperial Guard! 

We were playing on a semi regular basis at PI then at my place at Lakeside. I think it was at one of these games we met Sam at PI and invited him to come over to my place. 

Eventually life crept up and we grew up to be working adults.

Fast Forward again, I moved to Hong Kong and the gaming community here is united. With beautiful terrain and competitive play, I was back into it. I played every Sunday and spent weekdays painting. 

I hope that we can grow ourselves a team of core players - a club of sorts. I know we will always have distractions and life, but I somehow know deep down that we will keep gaming - just how often.

Wargames history - Crazyrat Edition

I started playing 'Magic the gathering' card game when I was in primary school till sec sch. Besides buying the cards frequently, I also bought a monthly magazine called 'Inquest' which was an unofficial M:TG magazine. Inside a particular issue, 'Inquest' did a review of epic warhammer 40k, I saw the models and was immediately hooked. Further 40k poison was introduce into my system after I saw the box art of warhammer 40k 2nd edition box through some advertisement inside the magazine.

Wargames History - Beef Nuggets Edition

Well I guess it's time for another wordy post. But I think it's always nice to know more about (and to reminisce!) about our hobby and our journey through it. I was inspired when I read this article on Bols about WARGAMING: About your first army.

It all started with this box. How and why? Let me first take a trip down memory lane.....

I was at one of my distant relatives funeral. So it was also a time where we would catch up with distant cousins and family. As usual I went to find the younger crowd (my cousins and whatnot) and saw them playing with some toys. I went to join them of course. And among the toys they where playing with, where Power Rangers, WWF (now WWE) wrestling figures etc... While we were all busy smashing the action figures with one another, one of my cousins was very protective of his "Toys". I was curious and asked him what they were, he replied "I'm not sure really, you have to fix them and paint them up, like model kits. This one is called a SPACE MARINE". I went home to do some research on this so called "SPACE MARINE". And the rest is history......

Suddenly discovering this whole new world of GW me and my pal, Jon then embarked on this magical journey. We made our maiden trip down to Comics Mart (now closed down) to make our first GW purchases. As we were totally unaware of what to get. We settled on "Gorkamorka" as it was the cheapest box set available. We had no idea it wasn't even a core system.

After a week when we realized that we bought a game we did not know how to play (and upon more research) we decided to play Warhammer Fantasy. So we saved all our pocket money and picked up WFB (edition with Brets & Lizardmen). This was also where I first met Kenneth Tan (Singapore painting extrodinare and Golden Demon Winner). He saw us holding our WFB starter box and introduced himself and his gaming group. He left us his contact and we contacted him a few days later. He and his group then showed us the ropes to painting and gaming in the world of warhammer.

Excited we rushed back to my place to split our armies. Therefore my first official army was Bretonnians. Although I did not go any further with the starter box before I bought my 'real' first army. The Dark Elves.

During this initial period was also where I met Raymond (energie), although I can't remember how we crossed paths (please remind me if you do Ray!) and we sort of set up our own little gaming group. I clearly remember the days during JC where we would sneak into Ray's hostel (illegally) and stay overnight to do gaming and painting!

The next phase of my hobby history came when Games-Workshop opened it's flagship store in Singapore. I promptly applied for a position as a 'red-shirt' and landed myself right within the hobby of my life! Boy was that an experience I'll never forget! Kenneth also joined the team slightly later and we had a ball of a time in the store.

But it was short-lived. The Asia-Pacific GW stores were not doing as well as expected (and due to GW's US expansion plans) meant that they would be shutting down all stores in Asia. It was an insane 2 and a half years though. It will always be an important part of my hobby life.

After the store closed my hobby life pretty much degenerated to the life of a hobbit before the ring. I lost touch with much of the local scene, and went about with daily life. (further studies, the call of duty-National Service in Singapore etc...)

And now here I am, trying desperately to re-ignite that flame that once burned so strongly. Now that everything is nicely settled down in life (hopefully!). I can once again dedicate a portion of my life to what I know will be a hobby that will be me. For life.

WIP: Termagants Part 3

Just finished a 3 hour painting session at Jason's place yesterday. It's always good to have a friend around to talk while you paint. Makes painting less boring and more interactive.

Anyways, here are the fruits of my labour. I worked on the weapon symbiotes (Scab Red + Mechrite Red) and the carapace armour (Warlock Purple). These are the base layers for 2 more layers each.

WIP Veteran Guardsmen Part 2.

Well sad to say my progress has been halted due to being extremely busy as it was the last few days of school. But rejoice as the Mid-year June holidays have officially begun!

Here was where I came to a standstill. Painting all the greens on my squad.

First layer of paint was Catachan Green. Followed by a light drybrush of Catachan green/Camo green 50/50% mix. Badeb Black was carefully washed into the recesses of the mini. Then finished off with a a highlight of Camo Green.

And to my surprise not one but two parcels arrived today! One is from Paulson games. I ordered 2 sets of Dreadnought Combat talons for my Blood Angels. These fit Ironclad dreadnoughts to make them bloodtaloned dreads. Anyone who needs some contact me as these are spare. (unfortunately I forgot I ordered 2 sets of Forgeworld Dreadnought arms as well!, Don't ask me why I ordered so many, I got too excited when I saw these and simply ordered without thinking. Gulp...)

The other parcel was from Maelstrom! I knew I had to have that Space Marine statue the moment I saw it. And with my BA army in progress I saw it as a perfect time to get some themed terrain in as well. Also ordered a little paint. Basically I wanted to try out P3 paints as I've been hearing nothing but good things about them.
