More Leviathan Units Arise from Slumber

As the campaign rolls into Week 3, more Leviathan units awaken. This time calling onto reserves from Forgeworld and some creepy crawlies from Asphodex.

Just very happy how this campaign has kept my modelling side really pumped to get more models out on the table within a quick time. So if you haven't tried going on campaigns, I strongly urge you to take the plunge!

Shield of Baal - Week 3 Highlights

Week 3 has come to a close and as Christmas fast approaches, games are going to get erratic owing to holidays and family dinners. Nonetheless, it was a good week with some interesting twists. Unfortunately this week for some reason, the pict feeds have been caught by Jokaero clogging up the tubes.

Here are some highlights from the week.

+++pic feed disrupted+++

Corporal Alan twisted his fur coat about him, loosening the harness that kept his comms alive. All he knew was that he needed to hold his city at all cost. At the fringe of dusk, the Hivemind sent forth its latest spawn, Jason the Ripper to steal the city from under the Vostroyans. Corporal Alan mustered his forces and managed to hold the city, just. The Ripper slinked back into the slave ships to divulge lessons learnt.

Jason vs Alan: 1,500 points, Imperial victory

Pat vs Ray
Brother Captain Pat arrives in system with the Mantis Chapter and immediately makes planetfall with a Imperial Knight in tow. Throwing caution to the wind, the Mantis Chapter went for the gullet to try to blunt Hivemind Razor Ray; ignoring Imperial commands to secure the city. Cleansing the city, Brother Captain Pat again proves his tactical acumen.

Patrick vs Ray: 1,850 points, Imperial victory

Batrep 1850: Shield of Baal - Week 3 Astra Militarium vs Hivefleet Leviathan

Fresh off the disastrous Week 2 where the Imperium forces were forced into a massive rout by the Hivefleet Leviathan, remnants of the 43rd Vallorians have pulled back into the city of Asphodex to consolidate our defences and try to stem this tide called Hivefleet Leviathan.

Excerpt from logged communications, Sector 13, Asphodex, Day 18 :

0650 - 43rd Vallorians have reached Sector 13. Assuming defense of sector. Regiment at 43% combat efficiency. Request immediate resupply.

0845 - Request acknowledged. Enginseers enroute for mechanical repairs. Knight Paladin of House Thenn seconded to 43rd Vallorians.

1315 - Multiple xenos signatures registered at outskirts of Sector 13 and approaching. Request immediate air support and back-up.

1338 - Xenos sightings acknowledged. 43rd Vallorians are to hold Sector 13 for the Emperor.

1345 - Sector 13 is under attack. I repeat, Sector 13 is under heavy Xenos attack.

1437 - Zone 3 is lost. I repeat Zone 3 is lost. All other zones under heavy attack.

1542 - Multiple zones lost. I repeat, multiple zones lost. We need immediate back-up. We cannot hold out for long. May the Emperor protect us all...

Rule Clarification - D Weapons and Look Out Sir

Skytyrant vs Imperial Knight
So there was a confusion yesterday over D Weapons and Look Out Sir. I was playing the Skytyrant Swarm and Pat charged in his Imperial Knight.

The question: When the Tyranid player chooses to do Look Out Sir, do the extra wounds caused by the Imperial Knight's D Weapon carry over?

Shield of Baal - Week 2 Conclusion

The 2nd week of the campaign has just concluded and the results are in. For those following, this is the mission that GW gave us in the Shield of Baal Leviathan book.

Lysios was the first planet in the Cryptus System to feel the full weight of the Tyranid invasion. Lysios is a desolate wilderness, its lands and cities scoured by a slow-moving tidal wave of water and debris. The inhabitants lived in huge crawler hulks, constantly moving to keep ahead of the perpetual tsunami. When the Tyranids struck, the crawler hulks were drawn up into a defensive corral, protected from the Tyranids by the Warriors of the Imperium.

Will the Imperials hold this world or will it succumb to the insatiable appetite of the Tyranids?

What each player is playing for: An additional Strategic Asset for the winning Faction during the Apocalypse on Cryptus following all rules for Selecting Strategic Assets (pg 30 of the Apocalypse Book)

With such rewards on the line, it was a full out fight for survival in the final game!

Shield of Baal - Campaign Week 2 Battle for Lysios (Iron Hands - Clan Raukaan 1850)

2nd game for the Shield of Baal week 2 campaign. I brought my Iron hands (Clan Raukaan) again. My opponent would be Titan Games store manager - Rico again as gaming buddy Jaeroler was coming back to 40K with his IG Astra Militarum and Ray was playing against him.

Pardon the unpainted Iron hands for the 2nd straight week, working on it... The amazing painted nids are painted by Rico (Golden Daemon winner).

Batrep: Hivefleet Leviathan vs Astra Militarum - Battle for Lysios

Continuing the 7 part series for the Shield of Baal campaign that I am running at Titan Games, this is one of the games that contributed to the Tyranid war effort.

Week 2: The Great Corral

Lysios was the first planet in the Cryptus System to feel the full weight of the Tyranid invasion. Lysios is a desolate wilderness, its lands and cities scoured by a slow-moving tidal wave of water and debris. The inhabitants lived in huge crawler hulks, constantly moving to keep ahead of the perpetual tsunami. When the Tyranids struck, the crawler hulks were drawn up into a defensive corral, protected from the Tyranids by the Warriors of the Imperium.

Something a little different. Jason, a new Tyranid player just joined the Hive Mind at Titan Games and came up with some sound strategy on how to make best use of the scenario special rules and win it for the Tyranids. Here is his story.

As battle unfold...

The Hive Tyrant Alpha circled its Swarm as it pondered the various tactical options available. Events the previous night on the other side of the metal ring had proven that The Prey were vulnerable in their metal shells, and that even the hard shelled defenders could be beaten. The previously accumulated knowledge came easily, and it knew all it took to get to the prey in the metal ring was the right combination of force and speed. It considered infiltrating Genestealer broods to get to the biomass within, but extracting that biomass once consumed would be a problem, given the grey-coloured defenders that surrounded the metal hulks.
The only option that presented itself was to slaughter the grey-shelled ones first, which presented an interesting conundrum, as far as the Alpha could feel the emotion of interest. The shapes of the grey ones were different compared to the yellow, with several moving on four legs, while three metal boxes were also on the field. Shapes it recognised as missile launchers were in prevalence, as the grey ones ran into formation. Spying the cannons on the large metal boxes that made the ring, it realised how to deal with the problem.
Stretching its extension of the Hive Mind’s will out to the Swarm, the Hive Tyrant summoned the creatures needed to break the defenders’ lines. Very soon, the feasting would begin.

Deathstorm - An Overview

Pre-ordered this the moment I knew it contained Tyranids and Blood Angels. Those Following the blog would be aware that I got the Space Hulk when it was re-released this 2014. This meant the start of a small contingent of Blood Angels who are steep in lore and history. Each model has a name and a backstory, making it an excellent differentiator from my xenos who seldom had names.

Great box art
I am glad I purchased it. The Blood Angels will continue to build on the strong narrative driven force from the Space Hulk collection. Captain Karlaen and his strike force will now rendezvous with Sergeant Lorenzo and the other 1st Company Terminators to make it into my Blood Angels collection.

Two exclusive characters found in the box include the Spawn of Cryptus and Captain Karlaen

Handy small sized rulebook which I may sell off. Anyone wanna make me an offer?

The Space Marine sprues

The Tyranid sprues
I am not too familiar with the Marines sprue so can't really compare with older sprues. However they are all complete kits (i.e. what you would get if you bought them separately). The same applies to the Tyranids so you will get all the extra parts. For example, I have not purchased the new Tyranid Warriors so this box set is perfect.

Worth noting too that the models in this boxset have special rules which are covered in the Deathstorm supplement. They are quite powerful too. I will probably magnetize the Warriors, Carnifex and Dreadnought.

Base comparison
The dreaded base size change. When I first read it I was perplexed and angry.I still am kinda. I would not be one of the Space Marine players who would be almost forced into re-basing their entire collection or suffer inconsistency across their collection. The one from the left is the new Fex base, Spawn base, Dreadnought, Warrior, Assault Marine and Genestealer. As you can see the 32mm is remarkably larger than the 25mm. This may cause issues in the competitive scene.

The prized miniatures
The two above area really nice and I am glad that GW made them. Really nice kits.

One thing struck me was the Campaign Supplement - a thin 30 odd page book. It has all the dataslates for the models in this boxset. The downside is that it contains the 2nd part to the Shield of Baal campaign, continuing the story from where the Shield of Baal: Leviathan left off. Really sly of GW to force people to buy this set to complete the collection.

Shield of Baal - Week 1 Results for the Vitria Strike

I am running a modified campaign for the Shield of Baal at my LGS. As there are few players who actually have Sisters of Battle, I have swapped them out for Imperials which include Astra Militarum, Astartes, Sororitas, Inquisition, Grey Knights and all Space Marine Chapters.

Following closely on the heels of the fluff, I have included rewards which will help the final battle on Week 7. Each week tallies nicely with one of the 6 mission included in the Shield of Baal rulebook.

Week 1: The Vitria Strike
The first inkling the Imperium has of the doom engulfing the Cryptus System comes on the planet of Vitria. Amidst a labyrinth of buildings made from hardened glass, the warriors of the Militarum Tempestus are forced to battle their way past a series of ferocious ambushes before they are finally able to learn the true target of the Tyranid invaders.

What you are playing for:
Additional reinforcements for the winning Faction.

Imperial: 1 unit of 10 Scions (hotshot lasguns with 2 plasma guns) with Sergeant (the Kappic Eagles) mounted in Valkryie.

Tyranids: 1 unit of 16 Genestealers with Broodlord

Shield of Baal - Campaign Week 1 Vitria Strike (Iron Hands - Clan Raukaan 1850)

The gaming group is currently playing the Shield of Baal campaign with sponsor from Titan Games LGS. Ray the planner for the campaign came up with the idea to expand the campaign armies involved to all Imperium armies to incorporate more gamers as not all 40K gamers have Imperial guard Astra Militarum/Sisters of battle Adepta Sororitas/Blood Angels.

My first game of the campaign is against Titan Games LGS store manager Rico who restarted his Tyranids army after a hiatus. Had been awhile since I last wrote a slightly detailed battle report.

Contributing to the Imperium war effort on planet Vitria, Clan Raukaan sent a small detachment together with attached Imperial knight house Ã†rthegn to eliminate the Tyranids menace infesting the same city ruins that saw the defeat of Astra Militarum vostroyans in an early battle.

Iron hands - Clan Raukaan list

Shield of Baal - Campaign Week 1 Vitria Strike

3,000 points aside, we played a 2v2 game. Each player had 1,500 points to play with. This is the first game for the Shield of Baal Campaign that I am running for Titan Games. It is a 7 week campaign that uses league rules. Two main factions each vying for Mission Points every week. Each week will award a bonus to the final week's game which is an apocalypse game.

This week is the 1st week so we played the Vitria Strike Mission from the Shield of Baal Campaign book.
Mission 1
The reward for the apoc game is additional reinforcements for the winning Faction.
Imperial: 1 unit of 10 Scions (hotshot lasguns with 2 plasma guns) with Sergeant (the Kappic Eagles) mounted in Valkryie.
Tyranids: 1 unit of 16 Genestealers with Broodlord (both work out to 285 points)

Batrep: 1850 of Ultramarines vs Hivefleet Leviathan

Fresh off the defeat to Marshall in the previous game I am back for another. This time I rushed out my Tyrannocytes but I still have some work to do on them. Washing them is quite difficult owing to their size forcing me to slap that wash in one go where possible. Hivefleet Kraken (belongs to the store) sent 2 Crones to help. This is my list:

Hivefleet Leviathan
HQ
Hive Tyrant with TL Brainleech Devourers
Hive Tyrant with TL Brainleech Devourers

Shield of Baal, New Starter and Some Macaroons

I was one of the few lucky ones to snag a copy of this really beautifully produced book at my LGS and I am glad I put the deposit down for it. It is beautiful. Embossed, it reeked of quality.

Fluff more than rules. I enjoyed every bit of it

Batrep 1850 Points: Hivefleet Leviathan vs Ultramarines

Not the usual quality of batreps I am used to but this will suffice. Primarily due to my army being in bits and pieces as I am preparing them. I am playing Hivefleet Leviathan today and my opponent will be bringing Ultramarines.

Hivefleet Leviathan wakes up from its slumber

Tyrannocyte

Went down to Titan on Monday to pick my Tyrannocyte and WD up. Couldn't wait hence I broke it open. Man this kit is detailed and has many repetitive steps due to it's 5 sided style.

Toxicrene and Maleceptor Completed

The greenstuff has cured and I thought I would share it you guys (especially Greg Hess and Rico Chia). I think this kit was designed to be magnetized if you just figure it out. Now I am glad I did it because I am sure one day the Maleceptor will become viable and I want to have the option to switch without going out and getting another kit.

Toxicrene and Maleceptor - Magnetized

Popped into Titan yesterday to pick up my White Dwarf and then it rained. Had some spare time to kill so picked up the Toxicrene kit. Not knowing which to build, I read the WD and decided to build both!

While I plan to use the Toxicrene more owing to the new Pods incoming next week (which I ordered 3), I wanted to have the flexibility of using the Maleceptor too.

Build the main body but kept the head apart.
 More after the jump...

Breaking News: 3 in 1 Drop-Pod Kit for Leviathan Sporocyst / Mucolid / Tyrannocyte

More Tyranid leaks spotted. Following on from the post I made yesterday, looks like the drop-pod or null deployment for Tyranids is back! November is going to be an amazing month.

Batrep:1850 Tyranids vs Eldar

War arrives

My Altansar Eldar take on Marshall's Hive Fleet Behemoth again. Marshall changed bits of his army from the previous game by removing the Raveners and replacing them with Genestealers.

Dark Eldar Army Showcase & a little "Color Theory"

Today I'm gonna be discussing about the problems with painting armies as a whole. Daunting no doubt, but very achievable if we prioritise the steps and compromise a little. This allows us to field largely "painted" armies. Providing us the visual treat we all yearn for when we play a game of 40K.

Batrep: 1850 Altansar Eldar vs Hive Fleet Behemoth

Marshall called me late in the morning to let me know that he can play today! So I packed up my bags and made my way to the game store. This was the start of a very close game.

Completed Guardian Squad Addan's Wave Serpent

I managed to put the final touches on the Wave Serpent that serve Guardian Squad Addan. These included panel line highlights which is a mix of Warlock Purple and Emperor's Children. I then go back and pick out the extreme edges with Emperor's Children.

Also added the red gems to the Serpent. These start with a base of Scab Red, Blood Red and then Blood Angels Red finished with a white dot.

Added decals to identify the Wave Serpent pilot and the rear logo for Squad Addan.

Batrep: Eldar vs Dark Angels: Ravenwing

Stephen wanted a game with me after our apoc game we had last weekend so we made an appointment to play on Wednesday. He plays Dark Angels and paints his stuff. Excellent. He brought a full Ravenwing with Sammael, 2 units of Black Knights, 2 units of Ravenwing bikers, 2 Dreads and 2 units of Devastators. I brought my usual 1850 points of Eldar.

1850 points, we played the first mission in the book: Cleanse and Control.

I deployed first to get the first turn.

Kept my War Walkers, 1 unit of jetbikes and 2 units of Warp Spiders in Reserve/Deep Strike.

14,000 Points Apocalypse ABO Style!

After waiting for what seemed like forever, the guys and I finally got a chance to gather and set down our models for what seemed like our quarterly Apocalypse game. This time it seemed that we have escalated the pointage. 2 players aside with 14,000 points of miniatures on the board.

We had Marneus Calgar (Marshall) and Cypher (YC) on one side. On the other side we had Bellial (Stephen) and Eldar (myself).

It seemed like Belial was on the hunt for Cypher and the Eldar for their own reasons were coming in to assist them in capturing this agent of Chaos. Marneus it seems has been duped into working with Cypher.

Let battle commence!

Belial had most of his units waiting in Deep Strike. I deployed my Super Heavies and Serpents to try to capture objectives

Space Hulk - 4 Times Lucky

After waiting for 5 years for the return of Space Hulk, GW finally releases it again. I missed the 2009 launch when I was back in Hong Kong and was caught up in Fantasy back then. Fast forward to today, I managed to snag one. I love the models in this box and while it was expensive, S$140 for the set, the quality is top notch. The tiles and tokens are all printed on embossed hardboard which are thick!

The Terminators are beautiful and very detailed. I do plan to base them up on 25mm bases (while this will mean they are useless in 40k, the board itself favours the smaller base size) and mark their forward and backward facing, making it easier to play. I am currently using my Genestealers from my 40k army until I finish painting the ones from the box set up.

First new mission from the book, Beachhead. Uses the new Boarding Torpedoes making each game slightly different as you enter from different points of the Space Hulk

X Wing Tournament Report - GREX September 2014

After much flying about using my tournament list and playing in the PI League, the day arrived and I entered the GREX X Wing Tournament.

"Whisper" — TIE Phantom32
Veteran Instincts1
Fire-Control System2
Advanced Cloaking Device4
Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter12
Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter12
Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter12
Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter12
Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter12

The list was designed to take down Falcons as I was expecting them to come in droves owing to the heavy Phantom meta. Unfortunately for me, I did not meet a single Falcon build. Here are my 3 games.

Mark brought the new Rebel ACES which was released this week. I did not know what to expect so kept Whisper out of the battle for a very long time. Early game saw it swing in my favour when I managed to take down Gemmer but in response, Mark's Z95 swarm took down majority of of my Ties. I played quite badly and hemmed myself in losing Whisper and then the game.

X Wing League Week 2 and Nagash

Week 2 and I got 4 more games. Played Jeremy, Andreas, Roy and Dale. Managed to beat Jeremy, Roy and Dale but lost to Andreas. He is currently the leader of the pack so looks like I may not get dibs into the prizes. Dang.

Game with Dale who brought a 4 Interceptor + PTL. Excellent flying although I am not convinced by PS6 pilots.

Tournament Practice

The GREX store tournament is coming this 28th Sept and I will be playing. Will probably be bringing my Phantom Mini Swarm - one of the variants. With the PI League in full swing now, I took the opportunity to score some league points and get some practice in with Dale.

"Whisper" — TIE Phantom32
Veteran Instincts1
Fire-Control System2
Advanced Cloaking Device4
Alpha Squadron Pilot — TIE Interceptor18
Alpha Squadron Pilot — TIE Interceptor18

1st Game against Dale - managed to win this. The small block had difficulty chasing my Phantom

X-Wing: PI League and Marshall 40K

The PI X-Wing league has started so I headed down to PI yesterday to get in a few games. Dale who works at the store gave me 2 solid and close games! I brought a variant of my Phantom + mini swarm for my first game. Dale brought Chewy, Airen and a Red Squadron.
I lost my Phantom early due to a bad call by flying between two asteroids, hemming me in from Turn 2 onwards. Dale quickly took Whisper out. Surprisingly, my Alphas managed to down Chewy and even took out Airen and the X Wing. Amazing show and all within the hour.

1st game with Dale

X-Wing with Roy and Space Hulk

Changed it up a little yesterday. Got into BB at about 1:30PM and while waiting for Roy, I worked on the paint job that I botched up previously. Also added red dots to start up the Tie Fighter engines!

Playing Rebels instead this time. Actually sat down and created a list based on Airen Cracken. I was going for full range 1 synergy.

Struggled to work on how to keep Biggs behind and ended losing Dutch early game. Didn't help that the Ties were scoring Hit, Crit or Hit Hit. Kept on playing but eventually could not take the punishment meted out by the Phantom.

More X-Wing, PI League

Got a few games of X-Wing in yesterday with Jeremy and Vick. Also managed to pick up some loot for the PI League. Thanks Dale!

Batrep: Grey Knights (7th Edition Codex) vs Eldar 1850 Points

So it has been awhile since I played 40K and Marshall has been running around crushing people's heads in. Keeps going on about how only 1 person has consistently beaten him (i.e. me). Now that he's gone off to be his own man, he decided that it's time to throw the gauntlet down on the old man (i.e. me again).

X-Wing: Second Video

Managed to get in 6 solid games of X-Wing yesterday. 4 with Vick and 2 with Jeremy. I played two variants of the Whisper list that I have been experimenting with. In both builds Whisper is kitted out exactly the same:

"Whisper" — TIE Phantom 32
Veteran Instincts 1
Fire-Control System 2
Advanced Cloaking Device 4

The two other lists had either Academies x5 or Defenders x2 - all without upgrades.

I also managed to get in 2 videos albeit the second one got cut off due to a flat battery. I also tried to mitigate the problem with moisture by leaving the camera to dry up first. It worked only until 1 hour into the video and then it started fogging up again. I'll keep trying.

X-Wing Practice with Video

Played 2 games of X-Wing today with Dale of PI.

I thought I change things up a little by tracking my games so I brought my trusty GoPro to film my game (wider camera angle than my regular point and shoot). I was initially hoping to film both games but the battery ran out after 1 hour!

I played the first game which was recorded using list:
I don't know why my camera split this into 2 videos but here they are. Apologies for the cloudy ending, the fogginess was due to the moisture trapped inside the camera. I have taken steps to ensure this never happens again. As for the audio, I was thinking that it would be secondary to the actual feed since I was hoping to show you guys the actual flow of the game.

More X Wing Practice

Was originally practicing for the tournament this weekend but missed it due to paintball practice ending too late. Nonetheless, I managed to squeeze in a few games with Roy and Vick last week. Here are some pictures of the games.

Roy brought a Decimator list with 2 Interceptors from Alpha Squadron. I brought my Ten at 10 list.
