Improving the Gameplay X-perience for X-Wing

Like many of you who dived nose deep into X-Wing have come to realise, you'll find that our ships slide about on the gaming mat quite easily. This makes for a disruptive game as the game is meant to be quite precise.

My friend Roy found a simple solution. 3M Bumpon stickers. Once stuck under the base of the ships, they provide a solid grip. You can now push your template against the base and the base still would remain locked to the spot. Here's one example

4 to a base. This ship now grips really hard on the mat.

Batrep: Ghazghkull Orks vs Altansar Eldar

Youcai and myself played a 1850 game earlier and this is the batrep. Hope you enjoy it and if you do, do drop us a comment. Also remember to "Follow" to get consistent updates!

YC brought Ghazzkul and gang. His list had 3 Battlewagons (G was riding the golden one) while the other 2 had Orks armed with various choppa etc. Close combatants, 20 each. He brought a large unit of Shootas (30) and another large mob of 15 Lootas with Mekanik. There is a unit of 3 Heavy Nobs with a Painboy. 2 Kans and a Dakka jet.

I brought the same list I have been playing. Boring I know but I do like the ability of this list to take all comers in 7th Ed. The fluid nature of the Tactical Objectives also forces me to be mobile. MSU's also take a strong presence in 7th ed armies now.

YC built his army just the night before for our game-subtle shades of grey.

Batrep: Altansar vs World Eaters - The Curtain Draws Open

You Cai and I finally got to play our game. 1850 a side, YC would be bringing a 30k army using the Forgeworld ruleset. I crafted a short narrative capturing the dark work that the Eldar do in the background. The stage was set, let the battle begin!

The Curtain Draws Open
Farseer Turendas felt rather than see the the approach of the cloaked figure.

"It is time" said the shimmering figure.

"This is no mere mortal you tasked us to assassinate. He is a beast among their kind", replied Turendas. He had his suspicion that no matter his query, it would not change the outcome.

"You serve as others have before you. Morag-Heg has Her purpose", replied the fluid image.

"Then it is done" acknowledged Turendas.

He knew that the Harlequins broke no discussion when the decision has been made. Farseer gathered his Runes and Ghost Helm and sent out the message to gather the warhost. Altansar goes to war.

Pre-game
YC recently completed his Angron model and we were gearing up for our ABOcalypse in about 1 month. I set the narrative up as a battle that took place way before Angron was caught in the Heresy, back in 30k. This was after the Eldar failed to assassinate him when he was a child.

What is known is that Angron was discovered by a slaver who chanced upon the battered and bleeding figure of the young Primarch surrounded by scores of alien corpses, high in the northern Desh'elika Mountains. History does not record what species these aliens belonged to, but many Imperial scholars believe them to have been Eldar who attempted to kill the Primarch, due to some psychic foreknowledge of the plague upon the galaxy he would one day become. Angron had been badly wounded in the combat, but remained alive.

-- taken from Warhammer40k Wiki

Now that the Primarach has reestablished contact with his Chapter, Angron was tasked by the Warmaster Horus to bring an outer-rim world to compliance. Upon completing this task and prior to departing to another system, the Eldar set a trap to isolate him from his main force and bring him to the ruined city of Brakenn V as the spearhead.

Batrep: Altansar Eldar takes on Hivefleet Behemoth at Titan Games

Finally had the opportunity to play a 40k game with Marshall. We tried about 4 weeks back but failed due to time constraints. Today, we had the time to sort out a game without having to rush through it. 1850 each, off we go.

My list was pretty much unchanged since the 6th Edition. I wanted to see if my balanced force would be able to deal with the multiple and constantly changing Maelstrom Tactical Objectives which I believe will make the game more random but also forces the players to bring balanced forces.

Singapore X-Wing Regionals 2014

So what have I been up the past few weeks? Besides work and real life, it was practicing for the Regionals. Held at Gamersaurus Rex, we had a small contingent of Malaysian players who turned up as well.

Unfortunately I could not take many photos as the games were really tight. We had 35 people sign up and 6 qualifier games to play. I brought the following list:

"Echo" — TIE Phantom30
Veteran Instincts1
Recon Specialist3
Advanced Cloaking Device4
Bounty Hunter — Firespray-3133
Seismic Charges2
Tactician2
Omicron Group Pilot — Lambda-Class Shuttle21

The following pictures are caught before I kicked off each round. Swiss rounds.

First game against Elliot fielding a Jonus + Bombers x3. He is an old gaming buddy of mine so we had a blast. I did lose this game though.

5k DE vs WE/Dwarfs

So we gathered for another round of Fantasy lately. As Sam could not make it, I took 5k of Dark Elves while crazy_rat and the beardy_one took 2.5k each.

As I had 5k to play with, I decided to bring a contingent of each unit so that we can see what each of them can do. Sadly that is the wrong way to approach army lists but it was fun nonetheless.

I brought 30 Dark Spears, 30 Dark Shards, 10 Dark Riders, 24 WitchElves, 24 Corsairs, 21 Black Guards, 14 Executioners, 10 Cold One Knights, 1 Hydra, 1 Kharbidyss, 3 RBTs, 1 Medusa, 10 Warlocks, 10 Sisters of Slaughter, 1 lvl 4 Supreme Sorc, 1 lvl 2, 1 Flying Pegasus Dreadlord (General) and 1 Death Hag BSB on Cauldron of Blood. Crazy_rat combined the Eternal Guards into one big unit of 63. Daniel brought 2 Gyrobombers (le horror!!) along with his contingents of dwarven warriors.

The terrain was set up with a tower in the middle and this proved quite crucial later on.

Painting the Eldar Revenant Titan: Preshade, Prime and Basecoat

Papa Nurgle paid me a visit last Friday and decided he would stay the weekend thus robbing me of the ability to take part in the ABOcalypse June 2014. I actually worked quite hard to get this fella ready for the event, even expediting the shipment of my base. Alas, the Emperor does not protect the Children of the Asuryan.

The last time you saw this model it was constructed and ready for paint. The only thing that was missing was a suitable base. I spent countless hours looking at local art stores for something that would fit into my KR Multicase and still have enough heft to prevent this behemoth from toppling over. I had to work within strict dimensions owing to the case I had pre-purchased for my Titan which was 114mm x 165mm. These dimensions closely resembled the Knight Titan base that GW recently launched.

In come Dragonforge. They have quite a large selection of resin bases from their largest which is 200mm to their smallest 25mm bases. I have gone for the Urban Rubble Series simply because it fit best with my own basing technique.

The actual product looks exactly the same

Golden Kris 2014

Following my success from last year, I figured I would go and try again in this year's Golden Kris painting competition.

This year proved a harder competition; with more entries and an overall higher standard than last year. As it should be - these things should keep getting better!
I entered three models this year:

ABOcalypse June 2014

And so we gathered for a ABO Apocalypse game at Titan Games recently. It was great fun gathering with friends to play a 40k Apocalypse game although some of us could not make it due to the Plaguefather. Nevertheless, we had great fun!

We were playing 6.5k a side with IG and Marines on all sides. Several Super Heavies made the field too. I had wanted to play with 4 Imperial Knight Paladins marching forward together alongside fellow IG beef_nuggets but due to unforeseen circumstances I had to play against him and so I had 1 Imperial Knight Paladin against his 3.

So it was the crazyrat and me (Chaos) against Skanwy and beef_nuggets (Imperium). Death to the False Emperor! It's me and crazyrat together again and our epic fellowship will continue with more fluffs.

We were playing with 4 objectives, 1 in each deployment zone and 2 in no man's land.

ABO First 7th Edtion Apocalypse game

Had our first Apocalypse game. Got the chance to organize the game with ABO gaming buddies.

Using 7th edition 40K rules. The game was planned to be played at around 10k points per side with 6 players. Due to Nurgle striking 2 players, we had to play the game with 6.5k points per side with 4 players. Got to thank Titan Games LGS for hosting the game.

Imperium
IG - 4k
Flesh tearers (BA) - 2.5k

Chaos
IG - 4k
Alpha Legion (30k) - 2.5k

The game was a blast. Never had such crazy fun in 40k for awhile, with super heavies failing spectacularly, daemons summoning left and right, rampaging knight titans, mass air battles between the IG. The action never stop.. well before turn 4. I will let Jaeroler post the more detail post on the game. Here are some pictures..

Batrep: Skarsnik vs Morathi

Really glad that Defeng has joined the Blood in the Badlands Campaign held at Titan. He put a 2000 point force and off we went to Titan Games for our game.

Added 3 Trolls, 2x5 Wolves to my list from the extra points

Batrep Dwarves/Dark Elves vs Wood Elves

Saturday saw everyone gathered again at Daniel's place for a dose of Fantasy after a looooong break. We were playing Dwarf/DE vs new book Wood Elves at 2.5k per player. Pictures are already up, so without further ado, let's discuss the battle.
My 2.5k army. On the small side to squeeze in my Pegasus Lord.

1 24x Witchelves block with Cauldron of Blood in its midst,
2 RxB units of 10 each.
2 units of Warlocks at the back.
3 RBTs cos of points,
a lvl 4 Supreme and a lvl 2 Sorc both Life lore.
1 Hydra and 1 Khardibyss rounds up my small elite army.

Daniel's Dwarves. Big on infantry blocks with a few war machines.

2 blocks of 30 warriors,
1 block of 20 hammerers
1 block of 25 ironbreakers
1 block of 20 miners
2 units of crossbows
1 cannon
2 bolt throwers
1 Gyrocopter
1 Gyrobomber.

Daniel and I decided to push heavily down the left flank and this flank has all our heavies. All 5 infantry blocks are lined up on the left with a Hydra, Warlocks, 1 RBT, Cannon, Crossbows and Bolt Thrower as support. Behind my Hydra was a RxB unit holding both my Sorceress.

Background
9111014.M41 - First report of the hive world Quintus III erupting in planet wide rebellion. Local PDF sway by the speeches and propaganda of the rebel leader join up with the masses to overthrow Imperium rule. The Adeptus Arbites were quickly overwhelm in many locations, consolidating in the planetary governor hive spire. The only Imperium force capable of stopping the rebellion at that time were the Necro 8th Imperial Guard with their knight allies stationed on the planet on a rearm & refit operation. Current status of the Necro 8th Imperial guard is unknown. Planetary governor Hartitcus sent out an astropathic plea asking for help to crush the rebellion.

9132014.M41 - Craftworld Altansar Farseers divining into the future saw that doom would strike Altansar  and all paths point to the mon-keigh world of Quintus III. The Farseers & Autarchs assembled a war council  and decided that a strike force consisting of engines of Vaul and titan were needed to exterminate all mon-keigh presence on the planet.

9139014.M41 - Brother Corbulo on-board the Flesh Tearers battle barge - Victus divine that planet wide rebellion was happening on Quintus III. Chapter master Gabriel Seth responds immediately, changing course of the battle barge and heading straight for Quintus III system.

9140014.M41 - Last transmission received from the planet reported blue azure Space Marines with hydra iconography moving between the rebels. Directing the rebels attacks on key installations on the planet.

9144014.M41 -  Dark Angels for unknown reason was operating near the region. On-board their battle barge - Ultimate Vengeance they received the astropath last transmission. Translating the message concluded that the Alpha legion was on the hive world. The presence and chance to capture traitor marines cannot be allowed to slip. Wasting no time the Dark Angels plot course for Quintus III.

9156014.M41 - The Dark angels and Flesh tearers arrived in the system of Quintus III. No rebel fleet was detected in scanner range. Arriving in the orbit of the planet, resistance from surface was non-existence but the Adeptus Astartes battle barges detected large concentration of rebels dug in on the outskirts of the principle hive. Both Adeptus Astartes chapters prepare to launch ground invasion...

X-Wing 100 Points Battle

After a short hiatus from X Wing, I finally got back into it with Roy at Titan. Flew the Aces and I am impressed with some of the moves those new ships can do.

This was the list that I played (courtesy of Roy):
Kath Scarlet with Expert Handling, Autoblaster
Carnox Jax with Push the Limit
Turr Phennir with Veteran Instincts

Roy flew this:
Wes Janson
Ibtisam with Opportunist and Heavy Laser Cannon
Jan Ors with Blaster Turret and Recon Specialist

Didn't manage to take a lot of photos except for the two below. Found Carnox Jax and Turr Phennir really powerful when it came to small skirmish because I could dart out of fields of fire and bring their guns to bear. I struggled with the use of Kath Scarlet as the ship has a large base so I kept clipping asteroids.

Batrep: Altansar Eldar vs Hive Fleet Behemoth

Fresh off the game with Marshall yesterday, I challenged him again to another game of 40k. This time I looked into the moves I made in the previous game and found the mistakes. From deployment to actual game play, I noticed a few mistakes. Confirming these moves, I consulted BatrepPat and he slammed home a few pointers for me. With changes in mind, I started this game differently. Enjoy the following batrep.

Eldar army list is the same from the previous game against Marshall.

My Farseers rolled the following powers:
Warlord: Prescience, Eldritch Storm and Precognition; Inspiring Presence from Command Traits
Farseer 2: Prescience, Fortune and Forboding

Deployment: I learnt something - my Farseers kept dying too quickly. I needed them to be within units. Having 3 units of jetbikes meant I could use them for bodies. And that's what I changed this game.

We rolled for 1st Turn and I won the roll off. I chose to go first to get my jinx and powers up. Night Fight was on.

Batrep: Altansar Eldar vs Hive Fleet Behemoth: Skyblight

Played a 1850 game vs Marshall yesterday. He brought a good Tyranid Skyblight List. Enjoy!

Deployment: Hammer & Anvil
Mission: The Emperor's Will

Eldar rolled up the following:
Warlord: Guide, Prescience, Precognition
Command Trait: Re-roll all Difficult Terrain
2nd Farseer: Misfortune, Forewarning and Doom

Tyranids rolled up the following:
WL (D) Dominion, (1) Catalyst
Warlord trait: Stealth in ruins
HT red (1) Catalyst, (4) Paroxysm
HT white (D) Dominion, (4) Paroxysm
Tervigon (D) Dominion

We used the same lists we have been using thus far. You can find the Eldar list here and the Tyranid list here. Do check the batreps on there too and let me know if you enjoy them!

On to the batrep proper!

Turn 1

I actually won the roll-off to determine First Turn but gave it to Marshall as it Night Fight was in play and going 2nd would allow me to take some shots at his flying circus.

Tyranids deploy really aggressively to decrease the time it takes to get to the Eldar lines.

The Necro-8th Guard Regiment is finally complete.

This lot began way back in 2008/9. And as always being much of a hobby butterfly I tend to stray between projects and never really got around to finishing up an army. With the recent Astra Militarum  book released and 7th edition on the horizon I picked up my brushes and put the final touches to these guardsmen.

I will probably be writing up an army list for them real soon. Definitely going to add in some air support from my already painted pool of Guard models. Till then enjoy the pics.

Craftworld Altansar Background Added

Read the Militarum Tempestus book the other day and caught the following regarding Craftworld Altansar. I have added the brief into the Craftworld Background Compilation

When the legendary Ordo Tempestus relics, the Barbed Gauntlets of Avitus, had been stolen by the Eldar from Craftworld Altansar, the Scions of the 55th Kappic Eagles were summoned to retrieve them. With vengeful purpose, the Eagles smashed through wave upon wave of Guardians in order to reclaim them.

Who knew the recent battle with Abby could have been the re-enactment of the retrieval of the Gauntlets!

Batrep: Night Goblins vs High Elves

I played this battle last week and meant to put it up sooner but work took the better part of my time. Here it is. I played a 1800 points of Night Goblins led by Snarsnik against the High Elves of Alarielle played by Dennis Sng. This was part of the Blood in the Badlands Campaign by Titan Games.

The mission was a little strange. Something that Rico of Titan Games cooked up. We rolled the following terrain.

Everything ready

My level 4 Nigh Goblin Shaman rolled these up

Deployed most of my stuff on this Scree Slope. I repositioned my Rock Lobba once we found out that I needed LOS

Batrep: 1850 Altansar Eldar vs Alpha Legion (30k Army)

Managed to get YouCai (aka CrazyRat) out to play a game of 40k with me. It has been quite awhile since I played with him. I brought my usual 1850 of Altansar, hoping to continue testing this army. I tweaked it a little by changing out the Scatter Lasers for Bright Lances.

YC's Alpha Legion

Probably the most expensive collection around

YC is working hard to complete the models
 Pre-game
My Farseer 2 managed to roll up Guide, Fortune and Foreboding

While my Warlord Farseer got Guide, Doom and Forewarning. He rolled Command Traits and received Coordinated Assault

We rolled for Big Guns Never Tire and Vanguard Strike. We rolled up 4 objectives so each of us took turns to put 2 in our own deployment zones.

Deployment

YC kept most of his units in Reserve (Deepstriking and Flanking)

20 strong Legion unit with Apothecary in the building with 1 Obj

Remembering the hard hitting Deepstriking army with Meltas of Patrick, I kept my Serpents back to the corner and out of range of his 24" guns

Deployed my first unit of Jetbikes behind this LOS blocking wall

YC's units in Reserve

My units in Reserve or in the Serpents
Turn 1
The first few drops fly in. My Serpents were ripe for the picking without their cover save

YC advanced his Rhino and Demolisher up the middle ground

The Melta armed Dread does 1 HP on my Serpent with the Guardians

Eldar Turn 1: I cast Guide and Fortune on the Wraithknight.

Focused all fire on the Dread as it was one of the few things in YC's list that had an answer to my Wraithknight

Managed to ping 2HP off the Dread, leaving it limping on 1HP
Turn 2
More Chaotic reinforcements show up. This special character has the ability to cause Penetrating Hits when the moves in, taking out my Guardian Serpent. YC killed off another 4 in the ensuing blast

He dropped in a unit of Headhunters (ironically without heads) behind my Knight, hoping to take it out from behind

YC dropped a funny droppod with the missile pack in the heart of the table. Unfortunately the Rhino runs aground trying to go through the wall! Anything BUT ONES!

Terminators deploy via Dreadclaw droppod. That thing is nasty when it falls! Does 1HP and stunned my Serpent

CRRRASHH

YC opens up and does 3 wounds on the Knight. Fortune is useless with that many AP2 weapons

The pod opens up and does 1 wound on the Knight

And fires off another onto my Jetbike unit at the back
Eldar Turn 2 sees the arrival of most of my stuff except for the Warlord and 1 unit of jetbikes
Warp Spiders, Jetbikes and War Walkers all arrive

YC moved his Dread back when he realised that a stunned Dread could not charge

With the Terminators in my backfield, I had no choice but to put pressure and try to Bladestorm him

After I moved everything

Guardians did me proud today and took out all 5 Terminators after a round of shooting

My Avenger Serpent backed up and took out one wound from the character

The War Walkers took out that pod

Totally fluffed my shooting so I charged the Knight into the Demolisher

While a combined charge by the Farseer and 3 jetbikes managed to kill off the two last Marines

Pulled back most of my force and shuffled them about

Pulled the Farseer into the safety of the ruins
Turn 3
The Dreadclaw moves! It kills off 3 Guardians from the 2 units and does one HP on the Serpent

The Dread finishes off the Serpent by putting in one more shot, crippling it. Thankfully the Serpent didn't explode

YC charges in with this character but failed to hit

In my Turn 3, I moved my Knight behind his tanks and surrounded his Dread with my Guardians. Buffs all around

War Walkers took out the Rhino with 10 Marines

After shooting into this unit I charged my Knight into it

They fled and my Knight proceeded to wipe them out

Regrouped my army now to face his 21 strong unit

Destroyed the Dread with a few well placed shots and took out the Special Character with the Spiders

Removed 2 HP on the Droppod
Turn 4 and 5: YC didn't do much, he had only his unit of 20 left but he played on. Good sportsman!
Converged my entire army onto that building

Opened everything I had at that last ruin

Advanced while staying out of his 24" bolter range

Pushed into his deployment zone in Turn 5

In Turn 5 I went in to contest the last objective earning me Line Breaker as well.

Captured for 3 - Big Guns allowed Heavies to capture

Captured for another 3

Another 3

Game ended at Turn 5
YC's list may need a little work. 20 strong unit is not doing much holding on to objectives. While hard to shift, they soaked up most of his 1850 points too. YC is going to tweak his list and come back harder I am sure!

The Wraithknight and Guardians really worked today, taking out a number of the major threats. My Walkers worked well too, ensuring that anything I targeted would be deleted. I am still figuring out how best to use my Farseers. Keep them in Reserve and they miss out at least 2 turns of casting. But against a Deepstrike army, putting them on the table would end up with a dead Seer in Turn 2. I will keep testing.

Hope you guys enjoyed the batrep!
