Sam's Corner: Samurai and Eldar

My new job feels quite challenging and going into it tired from the dust of the road was probably not a very good move. Will try to keep chugging along and hope for the best ahaha!

I did manage to finally finally settle on a color scheme for my Samurai themed Warhammer Fantasy Empire army. Yep, it's another of my long list of projects on the back burner.This fella (aka test model) has been through at least 4 different coats of paint. I went for the deep red and bone color scheme.

The test model took about 8 minutes to complete. I reckon the ones after that should be much faster. I'm opting for faster paint time now as there will be another 150+ to paint, on top of everything else from 40K and other random minis hehe!

This excellent miniature is from Wargames Factory's Rising Sun series. He's an Ashigaru trooper with gun.

Red Gore for the armor and hat. Dheneb Stone for the cloth areas.

He's from a detachment of 10 handgunners for the Empire army. It'll be a long road to painting up the army. But then it always is. I do promise to enjoy the process. Especially when painting the Lords and Heroes choices.

Eldar Wraithknight
So I gave in and bought the Wraithknight model. It does cost quite a bit but it is undeniably a beautiful model. I had the time and strength of will and mind to assemble it today. It was a fun process as I was also listening to the podcasts from Life After the Cover Save (hilarious) and The 11th Company (insightful).

I just did some pinning as I have no experience with magnets. Maybe one day..soon. The Wraithknight is a really tall fella. I opted for the Wratihcannon configuration with a Scatterlaser thrown in for extra dakka and some re-rollable goodness.

Above pic is a size comparison with a Wraithguard and a Fire Prism for scale. Impressive model. I also had an extra set of arms after the assembly along with the other weapon options.

Here's the new list I updated from my previous Iyanden list. I made some modifications for the new rules and some space points wise to include the Wraithknight.

Night Goblin Spearmen to Level 1 - Start to Finish

Our LGS is pushing painted units quite strongly and I welcome it. One of the biggest attraction for new players is of course nicely painted armies facing off each other. When I looked at my army one of the biggest units that could do with some paint was the large unit of 49 Night Goblins. 

Majority of the models are all from the previous Warhammer Fantasy starter box set called the Battle for Skull Pass. It came with 40 Night Goblin Spearmen and another 20 Night Goblin Archers. It is by far the best way to raise a Night Goblin army fast and cheap. 

Also, looking at them, it is quite easy to get them to Level 1 which was rather surprising. I'll go through the details with each picture

Base them all with sand and sprayed them with Flat Black. I had painted a few models at the front from about 4 years ago

Bases go a long way to enhance the look of these minis. Started with a quick drybrush of Snakebite Leather on all bases

Get a cheap and hard bristled brush to execute this. You will destroy your good brushes

Hit the bases with Bleached Bone to highlight the sand. While that was carried out, I started working in the skin with Knarloc Green. Remember, this is targeting only level 1 so we really don't have to worry about highlights to the skin until much later

Then I hit all the shields with Blood Angels Red. I have also completed wetbrushing their cloaks with Chardonite Grey

I find that working on the same colour across 49 of them to be the best. Wash your brush every 3 to 4 models depending on how quickly your paint dries. This is to prevent your paint from drying on the brushes leading to splayed bristles. 

So as I was painting I dropped one of the little guys on the floor. Stepped on it and then picked him up. After 5 minutes, I felt something wet and sticky under my foot. 

So I took a peek and found that my foot was bleeding! LOL never challenge your miniatures! 

Got back to work on their shields rims with Boltgun Metal. Remember at each stage, use one colour and try to complete the entire stage in one seating.

At this stage you can see that the unit is pretty much ready for the table top. At Level 1, they are all in base colours but because they are so tiny, you can't really tell whether they are at Level 1 or 2, making your work highly efficient in man hours.

There are a few more steps to get them to Level 2 (which is mainly for my units):

1. Yellow to shield embossing
2. Streaks of Goblin Green to skin
3. Bleached Bone to teeth
4. Space Wolf Grey to create hood dags

Once you do the 4 steps above, no one can complain about your beautiful minis!

Also on the table now is a unit of 20 Night Goblin Archers. I am contemplating using 2 units of 20 Archers in some of my games. However, I think I may have to complete my Savage Orc Boyz before I can start working on those Archers.

Games & Gear Kickstarter Review : Pro Studio Brush

Overhyped. While I would not go to the extent of saying these brushes suck. They simply do not deserve all the marketing hyperbole that has been tagged to it throughout it's Kickstarter campaign.

Cheap? It's reasonably priced, although I could get cheaper brushes of the same or even better quality than these sans the Kolinsky material. Granted I got 2 for the price of one brush yeah I'll let it be good value for your money.

Good? Like I said, they do not feel like what a High Quality Sable brush should feel like. In fact I'd though it was something else if I've not been repeatedly told a million times that these were "PRO standard Kolinsky Sable Brushes".

Enough talk. I took these brushes for a quick test. And naturally I compared them to my W&N and Raphael brushes. All I can say is they are worlds apart. You really are getting what you pay for.

I tried the PSS version which was shorter and more "normal". The regular ones were so long and heavy it really took extra effort holding them to paint. I'm sure with long painting sessions that I will get noticeably tired. Ironically one of the "features"of these brushes were "fatigue free". Think it really meant giving you a "free fatigue....."

The brushes were alright to use, just that they were nowhere near the claimed "PRO" standard which they pitted themselves against the likes of the top dogs. 

The control of the brush was just not there, and I probably attest this to the very disturbing weight of the brushes.

Don't really have much more to say. Well at least I have alot of "regular" brushes for my basecoating.

And I won't be buying any more of these that's for sure.
